Hercules is an English Oratorio composed by Georg Friedrich Handel to a libretto by the 
Reverend Thomas Broughton. It was first performed at the King's Theatre in London on 5th of 
January 1745. 


It is based on the story of Hercules and Deianira, as it is related by Ovid, in the Ninth Book of 
his Metamorpheses; and the same subject, as it is treated by Sophocles, in his tragedy The 
Trachinians.
